This March 10th would have been our beloved Bernedoodle Cooper's 6th birthday. Instead, he died October of 2022. It's taken us this long get to a place where we can right this review.

Cooper died from complications of severe Lupus. Dr Garfield diagnosed him with allergic dermatitis and treated him with topical steroids and allergy shots for a couple of years before his Lupus flared severely. His paw pads sloughed off, his lips and skin on his nose became ulcerated and infected. Only then did he biopsy his lesions. He then changed treatment, but what he didn't do was include an internal medicine vet in Cooper's care.

Cooper's blood counts eventually bottomed out, and he died from pneumonia after a few months of treatment with his dose Prednisone and Azathioprine.

I'm crying as I type this.

If your dog has a severe skin problem, get a biopsy. And if a potentially severe systemic disorder is the cause, involve a Veterinary Internist.

As a practicing physician in the DFW area, I've been reluctant to write this review, but my wife will not let it go. BTW, she's a nurse, so we both know what we are talking about.

We might have lost Cooper anyway, but we did not offer him the best care available by using only Dr Garfield, and for that, I will never forgive myself.

It was never allergies. It was always Lupus. The first vet who saw his original lesions said to us, "this could be something like Lupus."

We were so relieved when Dr Garfield told us it was just allergies, so we accepted it and trusted him. We should not have.

It was always Lupus, and Cooper needed more than a Dermatologist. He developed catastrophic hemolytic anemia on high doses of immunosuppressives, and died in 2 days from sepsis from pneumonia.

We got to the Veterinary Internist too late, and our local vet is the one who directed us to him, not Dr Garfield.

I'm not saying that his office isn't nice or that his assistants weren't great, they were.

It's my opinion that he should have biopsied Cooper sooner, and once a potentially severe systemic illness was implicated, he should have included a systemic specialist, an internist.

I should have been more personally involved in Cooper's care.

We have been seeing Dr. Garfield for our English Bulldog who suffers from alergies. Their office is great, people are very friendly and they are great to deal with. We are still a "work in process" with our dog but I don't blame Dr. Garfield for his slow recovery. Caring for an English Bulldog is more difficult and expensive than I would have ever thought.
