Urgency of the call needs to be communicated to the answering staff in order for the physician to respond immediately. After office hours the physician on-call will provide advice by phone to determine if a visit to the emergency room is necessary; the response should be within 15-30 minutes.
One or more of the staff members are able to speak one of the following languages: English, Chinese, Cambodian, Tagalog, French, and Spanish. Language service can also be provided by a telephone conference call.
Some laboratory tests can be done on-site, such as urinalysis, stool hemoccult, and blood tests that require only finger-pricks, including glucose, lead, complete blood count, and Monoscreen. Most imaging tests are done at Melrose-Wakefield Hospital.
