About

Carlos Roman

Cardiac Electrophysiologist Carlos A. Román, MD, FACC is Board Certified in Cardiovascular Disease and Clinical Cardiac Electrophysiology, and he practices at the Medical Center location of Cardiology Clinic of San Antonio.

He was inspired to pursue medicine by Dr. Christiaan Barnard who performed the world's first successful heart transplant. He chose to specialize in cardiology largely because of his mother’s cardiac problems.

Dr. Román received a Bachelor’s degree from American School of Guayaquil in Guayaquil, Ecuador before completing medical school at Universidad Católica de Santiago de Guayaquil. He completed his internship and residency at University of Miami Affiliated Hospitals in Miami, Florida where he met the noted Cuban cardiac electrophysiologist, professor and researcher, Agustín Castellanos.

Dr. Castellanos inspired Dr. Román to pursue a fellowship in cardiac electrophysiology, which, at the time, was a field still in its infancy. Dr. Román completed his fellowships in cardiovascular disease and cardiac electrophysiology at University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center in Oklahoma City. After completing his fellowships, Dr. Román served as assistant professor of medicine at Southwestern Medical School in Dallas, Texas for two years before joining Cardiology Clinic of San Antonio.

He is a fellow of the American College of Cardiology, and a member of the Heart Rhythm Society and American Medical Association.
