The only thing I know for sure about this practice is that Dr. Sween is a terrible representative for it. He colluded with several other departments at St. Jo's Hospital in Atlanta -- and did it, oddly enough (!) right after I reported the hospital for having failed to report a serious injury that I sustained (following a serious medication error before/during/after surgery) while in the ICU. The only reason I was in the ICU was due to that medication error in surgery... and so pardon me if I take offense that Dr. Sween chose to defend the surgical dept, the pharmacy dept, and, of course, the risk management dept -- when I ended up falling in the ICU and sustained a severe ankle fracture (requiring more surgery) and fracture of the fibula, as well. I developed symptoms of CRPS just a few hours after the fall... But then it only took me 19 months to get anyone to make that diagnosis... by which time, it is almost virtually impossible for treatment to be effective. They delayed diagnosis for fear that I would sue. I wish I had. Him, the hospital, the surgeon, the recovery room nurse + the ortho floor nurse who would not listen to me about symptoms of adrenal failure (they wrote instead that I was "whiny," completely missing "emotional lability, diarrhea, back pain," and even... becoming completely "unarousable"! most especially I would have sued the (DEAF) nurse with me when I fell (my ankle was hanging completely sideways / completely limp... and she kept saying "get up! get up! your leg is NOT broken." while she ran to slam the door to my ICU room closed so that no one would see. Oh, and she had taken her HEARING AID out because the noise of my room and all its electronics interfered with her hearing aid function. When I actually tried to stand on that ankle? It was the most sickening feeling and sound I've ever experienced. THEN she went and got a few of her cohorts and they lifted me back into bed. ANYWAY... Dr. Sween made all the wrong choices were he an actual advocate of good and honest patient care -- no one cares much that he betrayed ME... I only blame him for contributing to the loss of my HEALTH. I have been living with CRPS ever since the day of my fall. It spreads, something doctors don't like to tell patients with the disorder. It is now in both legs to just above the knees, and in both arms (initially it was in 3 fingers of the left) to the elbow, as well as the lower part of the face. The state investigated most of this, and found that the hospital failed to report what was a SENTINEL EVENT. The hospital vice-president actually looked me in the eyes and said, "You did not fall because I am informed of any injuries during hospitalization and I was not." Blew my mind... Please allow me to get off the sore topic of Sween's lack of character and onto,. rather, the superb and totally appropriate care I received once I dumped the colluding neurologist on my case (Kelman) and became a patient of Dr. Barry McCasland. He tried really hard to make up for lost treatment time -- it was just too late.
