Surgical oncology is a specialty that focuses on the surgical treatment of a variety of tumors, the most common being breast cancer, colorectal cancer, pancreatic and gastric cancer, liver tumors, melanoma, and endocrine tumors. Surgical oncology requires a specialized two year training program after a general surgery residency. Currently training comes from programs approved by the Society of Surgical Oncology (SSO). Dr. Ellenhorn graduated from the prestigious SSO-certified Surgical Oncology Training Program at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center MSKCC.org and he directed the SSO-certified Surgical Oncology Training Program at City of Hope for 10 years. mskcc.org. The American Board of Surgery (ABS) has received approval to offer a new subspecialty certificate in complex general surgical oncology.
