About

Eric S Millstein, MD

I often describe my practice as lifestyle medicine. When treating my patients I have three goals in mind: minimize pain, maximize function and optimize lifestyle. Most importantly, I believe that medical practice is a dialogue: an opportunity for me to listen to the patient and ask the proper questions to make an accurate diagnosis. Only then can we formulate an effective treatment plan and decide together how best to proceed. In my practice, surgical and non-surgical management of injuries is routinely followed by a discussion of injury prevention strategies in order to limit future risk. While success in achieving these goals is sometimes best served by surgery, I routinely consider non-surgical options first when appropriate.

Orthopaedic surgeons specialize in expert treatment of musculoskeletal injuries, including ligament sprains, muscle strains, tendon ruptures, bone fractures, joint dislocations, overuse injuries and arthritis. As a board certified surgeon, I treat school age athletes, professional competitors, weekend warriors and active people of all ages who sustain injuries that prevent them from returning to the activities they love most. My particular surgical interests and expertise include arthroscopic surgery and reconstruction of shoulder, knee and hip injuries as well as joint replacement surgery for arthritis of the shoulder and knee.

I treat many patients who have been told to stop running or biking or playing basketball to prevent further injuries. When coming for a second opinion, many people ask me "do I really need to give up my favorite activities?” I prefer to reframe the discussion, asking instead "what can we do to get you back in action safely?" Closing the door to physical exercise or sports is usually a last resort; asking the proper questions nearly always leads to the best possible outcome.

My experience with the doctor and office has been sub-par. I set my appointments well in advance, as I had to get a set of injections exactly one week apart from each other. The doctor was late about 1/2 hour for every single appointment, and I had the first appointment for the morning. When he finally arrived, no apologies...it was as if it never happened. The office cancelled my appointments three different times, as he was "not coming into the office", usually on Fridays. This was not only inconvenient, as it is a two-hour drive from my home, but it continually screwed up my protocol, which caused a lull of months between my series of injections.
Then for the finally kick in the butt, I had been using my blue shield insurance with him for about 18 months. Without a notification by mail, a sign at the check-in desk, or a verbal acknowledgement to let me know when I arrived in the office for three successive weeks, I found out from Blue Shield after submitting the forms that Millstein no longer takes Blue Shield of California PPO. So what used to cost me, after insurance, $56.00 per injections, I am now being charged by his office for the three visits, $975.00. I have gone back and forth with multiple members of his office and billing department, and each time their story changed. First they said, as a courtesy, they would accept the In-Network charge for the last three injections. Then they told me they never said that. Nobody speaks to each other, and nobody really cares about their patients. Stay away....it is not a healthy experience.
