I went to Heartland of Mentor. It was a terrible experience. They were not ready for my arrival and did not have my medication ready. I was told it was the law that I had to be weighed at that minute even though I just came from surgery and as a result of the way I was weighted I was injured. Also, even though there was apparent injury it took three days before anyone cleaned the area which never healed correctly and I still have the scar. The room was in my opinion dirty. The main shower was dirty and when I used it there was fecal matter on the shower floor. The beds are old and I had to fight to prove mine did not work and it was promptly fixed. The food to me was either boxed, canned or frozen. Nothing seemed fresh. At times they were very under staffed. I feel sorry for the employees who always did try their best. However, some of the people who work there are, in my opinion, too out of shape to be helping anyone. In addition, it seemed to me if you wanted something a little out of the norm it caused problems. To me the main goal was to empty the trash even if they had to climb over you or interrupted a family visit. As far as response time when you rang for help it all depended on how many employees were there that shift. At times I waited 20 minutes for assistance. What would happen if I could not breath or was having a heart attack? 20 minutes is a long time. This was not the employees fault. Management does not have backup employees for those who call off or are ill. Physical therapy was not the best mainly because the employees were too busy talking to each other or other patients. I felt like I was intruding on their social hour. I ended going elsewhere for physical therapy and had an extremely wonderful experience so I do have another facility to base my unhappy experience at Heartland. Other things happened like the time I was told the I.V. was supposed to hurt. My arm is still discolored from the fluid leaking into my arm instead of my vein. I guess the worst thing I experienced was going undiagnosed for heart failure. I kept getting sicker and sicker and my breathing was terrible. I was getting as big as a house. After I left Heartland I was admitted to a hospital and in a few weeks lost over a hundred pounds of water. I had so many things happen to me there I was just glad to leave. I normally do not write any reviews but all I keep thinking about is the older people who can not speak for themselves. If all these things happened to me and I can speak what is happening to them. Keep in mind that these events may have only taken place in my area at Heartland so I can only tell you how I feel and what happened to me. On a positive note I truly believe the employees do care and other departments like speech therapy are outstanding. They do offer a lot of things to do so you don't have to sit in your room all day. If they would clean up the place, have more staff, add an in-house doctor and fresher food this place could be a five. I did have to go back to rehab but I chose Euclid Hospital which was outstanding! If I have to go back for rehab again I'm going to Euclid.

Today is Mother s Day and I find it fitting to leave a review for the last group of medical staff to take care of my mom. My mom was in Heartland last year where her care was exceptional. They genuinely care for their patients and are staffed with wonderful nurses, aides and social workers.. My mom was transferred there from another nursing home in he area, where she was not kept clean, had to wait often for restroom help and was given wrong meds, not to mention not even having her own access to coffee, tea, microwave, etc. At Heartland, she loved the fact that she could have coffee, tea, a snack, etc, at anytime. They provided everything for her. Mom very rarely came out of her room at the other home, but at Heartland, she loved going up and down the hall. She would talk about how good the staff treated her, and that the only place she could be happier would be at home, which she knew was not possible. I am very thankful that my mom spent her last days where she could be happy and be taken care of by such compassionate caring people. I would recommend this facility to others. Ian have also known of 3 others there since my mom and they were very happy that they chose Heartland. Thank you, Heartland for whatever it is that you teach your staff, or the wonderful people that you hire. You truly make a difference in the lives of others and it is one that we will cherish.
