4 stars because I've only seen her once. I felt at totally at ease with her. She was professional and didn't talk down to me. She let me know what direction we were going with the treatment and also didn't push a lot of medication on me, unlike the last dr I saw. I'm hopeful that she can really help me.

I’ve been to some other psychiatrists that really rushed my appointment, but they didn’t do that here at all. I was able to take as much time as I needed. They made sure every single question I had was answered, and are always available if I think of any more questions I want answered. I've been other places that left me unattended for quite awhile, but not here. They would never leave me unattended and they always go the extra mile to make me feel cared for.

In 1997 our 13 year old daughter was suffering from anorexia/bulemia and was going downhill. We were referred to Dr. Susan Backes as a Christian psychiatrist. She decided to put our daughter in the hospital which turned out to be in the mental ward of a hospital in Houston. She was in with rebellious kids, goth kids, etc. She was the only one there suffering from anorexia. Back in 1997 there was not much help for people suffering from eating disorders. While at group therapy session in the hospital, Susan Backes accused my daughter of being controlling. She later also told my daughter that she would never get well and would slip through the cracks. Well, thanks to God, and not Susan Backes, my daughter overcame her eating disorders and graduated from Princeton University in 2006 and will be graduating from Columbia University School of Law in May 2009. Even though she hasn't graduated yet, she already has a job with one of the top 5 law firms in NY. So obviously Susan Backes was wrong.

I can't believe I actually had to log into "Wellness.com" to defend Dr. Backes. She is a smart, incredible woman that I would recommend to anyone. Check your insurance before you book an appointment, however.
I was raped and sought Dr. Backes for medical counseling. She quickly weaned me on antidepressants and a mood stabilizer, and within two months I was weaned off of the medication and healthy.
In reaction to the (ignorant) "Christian psychiatry" post. If one expects bulimia and anorexia to be cured completely through God, that's going to happen through the prayers and actions of oneself and loved ones. Dr. Backes can not heal what is troubled in one's religious soul, she can help you explore it and reveal your thoughts and ideas, but what goes on in your soul is between you and God.
Also, If one has an anorexic or bulimic child, obviously the child controls whether or not she wants to eat or throw up. The food doesn't come up on it's own. Dr. Backes probably sent the child to group meetings with "Goth kids" because she was as equally troubled as the children there. Perhaps the child's self consciousness brought her and the "Goth kids" together at the meeting. Perhaps the "Goth kids" were at the meeting were self conscious because strangers who don't understand or know them have turned up their nose, and, with a better-than-thou attitude, have coined them as "Goth kids".
Congratulations on your daughter's triumph over bulimia and anorexia. I can't say that I've ever experienced that. Obviously Dr. Backes was RIGHT. Your daughter IS controlling, she was in control of her life the whole time.
