About

Carlos Torre

Carlos A. Torre, MD is an Otolaryngologist-Head and Neck Surgeon that specializes in the medical and surgical management of sleep disorders and the optimization of nasal breathing.

Dr. Torre is one of few sleep specialists in the world with a dual training in Sleep Medicine and Sleep Surgery. He is also the only sleep specialist that is triple-board certified in Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery, Sleep Medicine, and Obesity Medicine.

Dr. Torre has created the Sleep, Snoring & Sinus Clinic of Florida with the goal of offering personalized and comprehensive sleep care under one group. His unique training and expertise allow him to avoid the fragmentation of services that characterizes sleep care and that contributes to poor treatment outcomes.

Also, the fact that he understands the connection that exists between breathing, nutrition, and mind is what makes his treatment approach unique and one that he plans to continue expanding for the benefit of all.

Medical School
After completing his undergraduate studies at Boston College, Dr. Torre returned to his hometown of Puerto Rico where he obtained his medical degree at the University of Puerto Rico, School of Medicine. During this time, Dr. Torre spent a year at the University of California San Francisco participating in the Advanced Training in Clinical Research fellowship program, where he worked along Dr. Steven Wang and Dr. Lilly Bourguignon establishing molecular pathways in oral cavity cancer cells that contribute to chemotherapy resistance and metastasis. It was also during this time that he was first exposed to the field of sleep surgery.

Residency
After medical school, Dr. Torre moved on to complete his residency training in Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery at the University of Puerto Rico, where he had the opportunity to learn from great mentors and colleagues. With the knowledge and expertise that he developed during his training in the management of disorders involving the airway, he realized that there was still a gap in the treatment of sleep breathing disorders. This led him to complete a two-year fellowship in Sleep Surgery and Sleep Medicine at Stanford University.

Teaching
Dr. Torre then joined the University of Miami as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, where he served as the director of the Sleep Surgery program and as faculty in the Sleep Medicine division. He also had the privilege of training numerous residents and a fellow in the field of Sleep Surgery.

His unique training allowed Dr. Torre to approach sleep disorders with a wide lens to address the root cause of the problem rather than just treating the symptoms his patients presented with. This led him to establish strong collaborations between different departments at UM. He also introduced several new programs such as personalized upper airway evaluation using Drug Induced Sleep Endoscopy (DISE), hypoglossal nerve stimulation (HGNS), and skeletal surgery for Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA).

Publications
Dr. Torre has published a wide array of papers on topics related to Obstructive Sleep Apnea and nasal breathing. He has also been invited as a guest speaker to many different international and local meetings where he has presented his work.

He serves as a member of the Sleep Medicine committee for the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery. He is also a member of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine taskforce that developed the new guidelines for OSA surgery.
