Dr. Halpern killed my healthy 3-year-old cat Simone by over sedating her for a routine ear cleaning. Because she was a rescue cat with a rough past, she was hard to handle at a vet's office, but she was a *perfect angel* at home. So, when we brought her in for ear mites, Simone hissed and scratched. But this is COMMON for many cats at vet offices.

Dr. Halpern was nasty with her. I should have read the signs then and taken her the hell out of there. He put her in her carrier and SPUN her around and raised his voice to try and disorient her. Again, I should have known better and gotten her out then and there. But she was already at the vet and needed treatment. So when he told us she could only be treated with sedation, we agreed.

We picked her up the next day. When we brought her home, she acted like she was on death's door. She could barely walk. She was peeing herself. We called them immediately and they said it was NORMAL. Finally, they told us to bring her back after 12 hours past. They'd give her the "antidote" to the sedative KETAMINE-- which is for dogs, not cats.

It was too late by then. We brought her home and she was dying. We had no idea, but her organs were all failing due to the OVERDOSE OF KETAMINE. We rushed her to the 24 clinic in Manhattan where she died. This was all within 24 to 36 hours.

We were devastated. We demanded to have her records from Lefferts Animal Hospital. When we read them over, we saw that Dr. Halpern gave Simone MORE THAN DOUBLE THE RECOMMENDED DOSE OF KETAMINE, which is fatal for cats. He said it was "off label" use and safe.

He was so disgustingly callous with us. He did not express ANY sympathy for Simon's loss and was INDIGNANT that we would even ASK QUESTIONS about her care.

She was THREE YEARS OLD AND IN PERFECT HEALTH. She had EAR MITES and DIED BECAUSE OF DR. HALPERN'S EGO.

Animal owner's have such little power when it comes to veterinary malpractice. We contacted so many other vets to review Simone's record and confirm the obvious: SHE WAS DRUGGED TO DEATH.

But Dr. Halpern sits on many NY State and City Vet Boards-- NO ONE would speak against him. VETS CAN BE AS CORRUPT AS BANKERS.

The only recourse I had was to take him to civil court to sue for the cost of her vet bills. I DIDN'T CARE ABOUT THE MONEY. I wanted him to simply face repercussions for his MALPRACTICE.

At court, I was in for another surprise. In his own defense, DR. HALPERN ACCUSED ME OF ABUSING MY CAT. He said that she was "clearly abused and not well take care of."

This was a DISGUSTING TACTIC THAT ADDED INSULT TO INJURY. That cat was my family's life. We adopted her, cared for her, and loved her. She was an angel. I WRITE THIS TEN YEARS LATER WITH TEARS STREAMING DOWN MY FACE.

IN 2005, there was no SOCIAL MEDIA. I could not make this story "go viral." BUT NOW I CAN.

1. I can WARN OTHERS to not visit Dr. Halpern.

2. I can WARN OTHERS to do your due diligence on your vets. Do not go for low prices.

3. I can shine a spotlight on how corrupt the veterinary industry is. It is nearly IMPOSSIBLE TO HAVE ANY RECOURSE WHEN IT COMES TO VETERINARY MALPRACTICE. Unlike medical malpractice with human patients, VETS ARE RARELY HELD ACCOUNTABLE for their mistakes.

In the memory of my beautiful Simone--TEN YEARS LATER--i beg you:
Share her story and do NOT take your animal or let any of your friends, family, or co-workers take their animal to Lefferts Animal Hospital or anywhere that Dr. Halpern practices. He is callous. Had he at least expressed ANY sympathy for Simone's loss under HIS CARE, that would at least show a shred of humanity. Instead, he VERBALLY ATTACKED ME and my family and accused US of abusing her. Mistakes happen. But his response to her death showed his true character: He is a sick man.
