About

Mary Roberson, Ph.D.

Mary Roberson, Ph.D, received her Ph.D. in clinical psychology from Michigan State University in 1988. She minored in Health Psychology. She currently owns and practices within a business called the Ayurveda Center for Natural Healthcare. What makes Mary's psychotherapy practice unique is her holistic approach that integrates the best of Western psychotherapy methods with the Ayurvedic perspective. (Ayurveda is a sister science to yoga. More than 5000 years old this ancient science of natural medicine from India is one of four systems of healthcare approved by the World Health Organization.)

Mary's main areas of practice include: (1) emotional issues (e.g., anxiety, depression, anger, trauma); (2) health related issues (e.g., cancer, chronic pain, fibromyalgia, stress related illnesses, more); (3) relationship issues; (4) life transitions (e.g., divorce, grief).

Dr. Roberson's psychotherapy orientation is eclectic. She utilizes methods from cognitive therapy, EMDR therapy (see EMDR.com), psychodynamic therapy, and more. She sees primarily individual adult clients, but also does some family and couples therapy. She is also very willing to integrate spirituality into the process if there is a desire to do so.

The first session usually involves getting a sense of why the person is coming for psychotherapy, as well as a little bit more about the client. Dr. Roberson will then share what she will have to offer in the form of a general plan. The client will complete some additional paperwork between the first and second session which will help to elaborate some background information and to think about what he or she wants to accomplish. Then together some goals are set and the therapy commences.

The Ayurveda Center has other health care professionals. We offer massage therapy for relaxation or pain relief, Ayurvedic services (consultations and treatments), and more.

Whenever I go, Dr. Roberson makes me feel like I'm her only client always offering a cup of tea or water prior to our appointment. She always goes above and beyond, exploring innovative ways of addressing concerns on which we are working. I've already started to recommend them to those I know, particularly if they are serious about their holistic health. Not only is she well qualified, but r. Roberson commits to continuing to deepen her praxis, and her continuing studies are evident in our sessions. I was confident that I was under the care of a professional. Every time I go, she always goes out of her way to make me feel important and welcome.
