I went to Katherine Guard because I had hit a low point in my life and needed help finding a new direction. She seemed caring and listened to my story. She had me hit pillows with a tennis racket and had me stretch out backwards over a sort of gym horse to "open me up."

She said I was rigid and that I intellectualized everything. When I asked for her to clarify, she said that my asking was a good example of my rigidity and intellectualizing. She made every personality trait sound like a flaw, and when I made efforts to change my behavior, she criticized that too. She told me to send faxes and leave phone messages in between sessions, which I didn't feel any need to do. I did it because she said I was resisting therapy by not doing it, but then, when I did, she told me I was violating her boundaries.

When I tried to ask about the plan of care, that was a boundary violation too. In spite of her concern with boundary issues, the majority of the therapy consisted of her having me sit in her lap and getting me to cry about unhappy events in my childhood. If I wanted to talk about my current situation, I was just creating a distraction that kept me from examining my "core issues."

This didn't fit with what I expected to get, but she explained that I would have to feel worse before I could feel better. She said I was resistant to therapy.

I can hardly believe I continued on for several years, wasting money and time and creating more misery for myself. The only explanation is that I had lost what little self-confidence I had at the beginning of this "therapy".

I felt the therapy wasn't working, or wasn't enough, and asked for group therapy. She told me I wasn't ready to cope with being in a group. My social skills weren't up to it.

I went on medications for depression and almost left my loving, caring husband, who did his best to support me through all this. Eventually I went to another counselor for a second opinion. The new counselor encouraged me to use my mind to take stock of my situation. Finally I saw how harmful this "therapy" had been, and ended my "therapy." I rebuilt my life and now, several years later, my situation is stable and happy.

Maybe she really believed she was helping me. Maybe someone else would have thrived on the "therapy" I received. I clearly didn't, and as a professional, it was her job to recognize that. She didn't, even when I tried to tell her. I cannot recommend her.
