My 15 month old daughter had surgery a week prior to our visiting Shands Starke. As a result she had several stitches on her forehead. While playing she tore her stitches reopening her incision revealing her skull and of course bleeding. My wife quickly loaded my older children and daughter into the car and drove them one mile to Shands Starke. When entering the emergency department my wife informed the desk worker of the incident and our names. The worker asked then to take a seat and would be seen shortly. After nearly a half hour (seemed like an eternity while holding a bleeding baby) an nurse came out to take another patient into triage and saw the baby gaping head wound. She asked the other patient to wait a little longer and took my daughter and wife into triage. She took the babies medical history, informed my wife that they were not equipped to deal with pediatrics and referred us to Shands Children's Hospital in Gainesville. My wife asked if they could at least clean and dress the wound. The nurse handed my wife gauze pad and piece of tape and then exited the room.
While my wife was in triage with the baby the front desk worker drilled my 14 year old for our address, phone numbers. After my wife placed the bandage she began to leave. The desk work jumped up and demand my wife pay for the visit. Get this, they billed our insures nearly $300 and asked us for $100 as a copay to tell us they could not help and wouldn't even dress the wound before sending the baby away. Even the paper work they sent us states there was no treatment offered or rendered.
