My dad was in Hospice in Melville and we couldn't have been luckier. He was treated with care and dignity. It's a beautiful, soothing and very serene place. Thank God for them and all who work there.

The care and empathy shown by all of the staff was so very comforting.
Our Evelyn was only there for 4 days. We appreciate all of the wonderful staff that made this experience a little less painful.
Thank you for all you do

I regret that I can not give a zero to this facility.
If you take your loved one here you can expect no communication from the medical staff, either as to the status and condition of the patient or the treatment plan.
Based upon my direct experience, the physicians here have a cookie cutter approach to treatment.
Here is what the physician will do - without advising you, no matter how often you ask to be advised - they will quickly ramp up medication dosages so as to render the patient a comatose, unresponsive mass, clearly struggling to take their last breaths.
The floor staff was polite, but uninformative, and unable to get a response to the family member in charge of medical decisions.
For me, seeing my loved one admitted in a condition where he was fully alert, conversant, and able to engage his family and friends put into a coma in a matter of one day - with NO WARNING as to the treatment being administered to achieve this - was horrific.
These people deprived me and my family members of a last conversation to say goodbye.
The goal for the hospice staff was to drug up the patient so he would die quickly.
At my insistence, the admitting physician finally contacted me a week or so AFTER my dad expired. He promised never to do this to another family. I frankly do not believe him. Administration has been unresponsive.
Somehow, I thought this was not the mission of a modern hospice.
I hope when my time comes I will not end up in this place.

A year has passed and the vast majority of this posting was written within weeks of my parents’ death. I've let these month's pass to ensure I my perspective was clear and now I am able to help others making this decision. It would be easy to give this hospice 5 stars because we encountered a number of very dedicated caring people working in a very nice facility. The support we received from many of these professionals was outstanding and very appreciated by my entire family. We came to this hospice with a parent who was given hope of transitioning home based upon the hospice literature, hospital social workers, and our brief conversations with a placement representative before selecting this hospice. Our parent was fully aware mentally, but weakened by a fight with cancer. After arriving to Hospice Inn, what my parent and family found distressing was the resistance we received helping us manage medications to help my parent feel better (something that was done in the hospital for months) without drugging into confusion. Round the clock high dose narcotics was not the appropriate recipe for this patient at the initial stages of hospice residency, it was far more distressing for the patient to be aware that the dosage of drugs being given at Hospice Inn Melville, was taking away the patient remaining gift (the mind).

For some on the staff, most notably the Medical Director, our very keen understanding of the patient’s desires and current medical condition created an uncomfortable undertone. We had spent many month's side by side with our parent understanding the patient’s condition and what was optimal care. The Medical Director and some staff made us feel like we were outliers because we objected to the Medical Directors recommendation of constant sedation. We knew at some point in the journey towards death that sedation would be needed to give peace. The Medical Directors resistance to truly listen/learn about this individual patient’s condition or show a willingness to provide exceptional care that deviated from their normal process was disappointing. He simply waited us out and in the end we had to give in to their approach, because the polite quite battle of how to provide medications worsened the patient’s condition. There was constant innuendo to other family members that undermined the will of the patient and proxy further increasing stress.

The reason I write this review is not to bash any of the very caring professionals or repudiate Hospice Inn, Melville. Hopefully my review is just a glimpse of insight that a patient or family can use if their loved one is in a similar situation.

My last bit of insight; it's most critical that you meet the Medical Director in advance of your transition. Discuss the condition and care you expect for your loved one. Make sure you feel comfortable that the Medical Director (who is the dictator of care and not a doctor) is someone you trust and is willing to deliver the care the patient desires. If you have a common view of the desired care, this facility can serve your loved one well.

I am praying for all families reading this to gain wisdom and peace.

My family and I would like to extend our heartfelt thanks and gratitude to each and everyone of the dedicated and caring people who took care of my mother, Dorothea Reeves. She was treated with so much kindness and respect and was kept comfortable and pain free until she went to heaven. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for the angels that you are. The Mary Ann Tully Hospice Inn is a beautiful place to help your loved one in their final days.

Not happy I don't feel they were very friendly! A bit cold! The Nurses were concerned about my Moms pain and they medicated her with morphine I never saw her awake again. She died 6 hours after she got here. I was told I could be in the room when she was going to be changed and I was not allowed, and I wonder why!
