I was referred to Dr. Rhein by my primary care physician because I currently suffer from an allergy to peanuts. I was curious if I had any other potentially serious allergies and wanted to have a skin allergy test conducted. Instead, I had a 2 hour and 45 minute appointment with Dr. Rhein, during which time he insisted on testing me using a number of tests that I did not believe were necessary and were outside the scope of why I had made my appointment with him. He spent large portions of time lecturing me on my peanut allergy in a disrespectful and condescending manner, despite my insistence that I had made the appointment to discover other allergies, as I have been allergic to peanuts for my entire life. Rather than simply giving me a skin test and letting me leave, he insisted that I also undergo blood tests for certain allergies, although I repeatedly told him that I did not want this done, and I certainly didn’t want any tests to be performed for which insurance would not pay for. He also insisted on certain breathing and breath tests for which I told him were completely unnecessary and not at all why I had wanted to come in for an appointment. Dr. Rhein repeatedly told me that I was “not taking [my allergies] seriously enough,” that I “could die,” and that he would perform the tests “he felt were necessary.” I repeatedly reiterated that I had made an appointment for a skin test only, and that I did not want tests to be performed that were outside of this scope and may not be covered by insurance. Despite my protests, he proceeded to prescribe them and insist that they were completed. As my appointment was, at this point, nearing the 2-hour mark, I submitted to the testing just so that I could finally leave. I have never experienced any appointment with any health care professional like this before (and hope to never again); Dr. Rhein paid no heed to my wishes or protestations in any manner and I was appalled at my treatment there.
