Dentist: Glossary of Terms
Abscess: an infection caused by bacteria or parasites that contain pus.
Calculus: also known as Tarter – hard deposits of biofilm or plaque on the teeth.
Cavity: hole in a tooth.
Crown: artificial covering for decayed or damaged teeth.
Endodontics: treatment of the nerves and roots of the teeth.
Oral Hygiene: cleaning of the teeth and mouth to prevent dental problems.
Fluoride: a compound that strengthens the teeth, used to prevent cavities.
Gingivitis: an inflammation of the gums around the teeth caused by plaque.
Periodontics: treatment of the gums, tissue and bones in the mouth.
Prophylaxis: cleaning done in the office to remove plaque, calculus and stains on the teeth.
