Ophthalmologist: Glossary of Terms


Blind Spot: obstruction of vision.

Cataract: clouding of the eye that blocks light into the eye.

Cornea: outer layer of the eye that controls focusing.

Glaucoma: disease of the optic nerve.

Hyperopia: also known as far sightedness, objects that are close are blurred.

Iris: color part of the eye surrounding the pupil.

Myopia: also known as near sightedness, objects in the distance are blurred.

Optic Nerve: nerve that sends information from the retina to the brain.

Pupil: center of the eye that controls the light that enters the eye.

Retina: part of the eye that transforms light.
