Asthma - Allergy Specialists: Glossary of Terms
Allergen: a substance that triggers an overreaction.
Allergy: an immune system disorder that causes an overreaction from environmental substances.
Anaphylaxis: A severe allergic reaction that is life-threatening.
Allergic asthma: a disorder that causes the airways to become inflamed from an inhaled allergen.
Asthma: a condition effecting the respiratory system.
Contact dermatitis: a disorder that causes an overreaction from skin contacting an allergen.
Drug allergy: a disorder that causes an overreaction from a type of medication.
Eczema: an inflammation rash of the skin that is characterized by dry, itching, and scaling skin.
Expiration: breathing out.
Eye allergy: a disorder that causes an overreaction from proteins getting into the eye.
Food allergy: a disorder that causes an overreaction from food protein.
Hay Fever: an overreaction to seasonal plants and particles.
Hives: also called Urticaria. Please refer to definition of Urticaria.
Hypersensitivity: an overreaction by the immune system.
Immunoglobulin E (IgE): an antibody which is the cause for most allergic reactions.
Immunotherapy: a series of shots to build up the immune system against an allergen.
Indoor allergies: a disorder that causes an overreaction to certain proteins found inside such as mold, pet dander, or dust.
Inspiration: breathing in.
Insect allergies: a disorder that causes an overreaction from a certain insect protein such as venom from stinging or biting insect.
Intradermal test: a test where an allergen is injected just underneath the skin.
Latex allergies: a disorder that causes an overreaction to latex proteins found in rubber or latex products.
Nebulizer: a machine used to get medication to the lungs.
Outdoor allergies: a disorder that causes an overreaction to certain proteins found outside such as trees, grass, and plants.
Rhinitis: An irritation of the nasal passageways.
Sinusitis: An irritation of the sinus.
Skin allergies: a disorder that causes an overreaction to certain proteins that come in contact with the skin.
Skin prick test: a test to determine an allergy to the injected substance.
Urticaria: also known as Hives. Normally caused by an allergic reaction which are red, swollen welts on the skin.
Urushiol: An oil found on poison ivy.
