Anesthesiologist: Glossary of Terms


Analgesia: any drug used to relieve pain.

Anesthesia: condition that blocks sensation.

General anesthesia: state of unconsciousness.

Inhalational Anaesthetics: anesthesia given by gases or vapors.

Intravenous Anaesthetics: anesthesia given by injection.

Local anesthesia: numbs the local site where applied.

Nitrous oxide: gas used during general anesthesia.

Paralysis: state of loss of muscle function.

Propofol: medicine used for sedation.

Regional anesthesia: blocks certain areas of the spinal cord and nerves.

Sedation: use of medicine to reduce pain and anxiety.
