Chiropractor: Glossary of Terms


Adjustment: term used to describe spinal manipulations.

Arthritis: the inflammation of the joints.

Cervical Spine: The upper spinal area, consisting of seven vertebrae.

Cervical Vertebra: seven vertebrae behind the skull.

Chiropractic: the profession of treating the articulations of the musculoskeletal frame to affect a response in the nervous system.

Chiropractic Analysis: performed on a routine basis to determine the patient's need for spinal adjustments.

Coccyx: known as the tailbone, is the last segment of the vertebral column.

Cranial Nerves: 12 pairs of specialized nerves that have origins in the brain.

Lumbar vertebrae: vertebrae located in the lower back.

Sacrum: The large triangular shaped bone located at the bottom of the spine.

Somato-Visceral: nerve pathways originating in the spinal cord and communicate with the internal organs.

Spinal Adjustment: term used to describe spinal manipulations.

Spinal Manipulations: therapeutic method performed on the synovial joints in the spine.

Spinal Analysis: the evaluation of the spinal column.

Synovial Joints: movable joints in the body, for example, wrist, elbow, hips.

Thoracic vertebrae: twelve vertebrae located between the cervical vertebrae and the lumbar vertebrae.

TMJ Dysfunction: a problem with the alignment of the jaw.

Vertebra: A bone in the spine. There are seven cervical vertebrae, twelve thoracic vertebrae, and five lumbar vertebrae.

Whiplash: sudden forced movement of the head in any direction, and the rebound of the head or neck in the opposite direction which cause injuries to the tissues of the neck and head.
