Old batteries... does anyone know where or how I can recycle them? I know it's now illegal to dispose of batteries in the general trash.

Does anyone know why disposing of old batteries in the trash is so harmful?

Where Can I Recycle Alkaline Batteries?

Alkaline batteries (AA, AAA, C, D and 9 volt) contain a corrosive chemical and other heavy metals. As of February 9, 2006, batteries are banned from landfill disposal. The City of San Diego is working with private companies to increase the number of local recycling opportunities. Currently batteries can be recycled at these locations:

IKEA, 2149 Fenton Parkway, San Diego, 92108; 619-563-4532
Recycle San Diego, 7716 Clairemont Mesa Blvd., San Diego, 92111; 866-525-6655 (fee applies, call first)
City of San Diego Household Hazardous Waste Transfer Facility (HHWTF). Please bring batteries when bringing other household hazardous waste.

Instead of buying alkaline batteries, maybe you should buy rechargable batteries. They maybe more expensive, but should save you money in the long run.

Can you recycle rechargable batteries once they no longer recharge?

Do you suppose those recycled batteries are safely recycled. China has flooded us with cheap batteries that do not hold a charge, leak, many are duds, cheaply priced to kill competition. Then we give them back to recycle them. They profit twice from inferior products that are killing the planet. Sort of like getting shot and returning the bullet to be remolded to get shot again.

All IKEA's in the US no longer are recycling batteries due to a new law by the department of transportation mandating that ALL batteries are taped on both ends. IKEA does not have the hours in this recession to have someone full time just taping batteries. It is a shame. The USDOT doesn't seem to realize that regular alkaline batteries are not conductive and will not spark. People don't realize the difference in batteries and it just takes one to spark. I guess a few trucks during transport have lit on fire. But don't bring them to IKEA, I tried and they won't take them.

IKEA on Fenton Pkwy does NOT take batteries anymore. I was there last month, Feb. 2010 and was turned away. They said that they can't even get rid of them, so they can't take them.
