About

Sharon Press, Psychologist

My approach to therapy is practical. Sometimes that means we will focus only on the current problem and develop an understanding of the thoughts and feelings associated with the situation.

With a clearer understanding of the issues I will work with you to develop new coping methods and problem solving techniques. Sometimes clients are having trouble behaving the way they want to and will need help understanding the etiology of the problem.

My job as a psychotherapist is to help my clients understand the hidden forces impacting on them, neutralize the impact of negative feelings leftover from the past, understand the current problem and define it as solvable, and then work with them to develop solutions.

Services I offer a general practice that is focused on both diagnosis and treatment of children, adolescents and adults. Services included are described below.

Individual Therapy
I provide individual therapy for children, adolescents, and adults. Therapy is tailored to meet the individual needs of the clients. In consultation with the client cognitive behavioral, systemic and psychodynamic approaches are used to inform the direction of the therapy.

Family Therapy
I provide family therapy for children and adolescents. My approach in unique however, in that I also will reach out to and work with the teachers, coaches, physicians, and other professionals in a client’s life if there are issues which need to be addressed outside of the treatment setting. This can include working with school personnel, occupational, speech, and physical therapists, and other medical professionals to aid the client in getting his or her needs throughout their day.

Marriage Counseling
My approach to marriage counseling is informed by the work of Gottman, and by family of origin theorists. In a concrete, practical approach to a couple’s problems, I will work with a couple to identify current problems, help them understand the etiology of their issues, and work with them to develop tools to more effectively handle the issues with which they are struggling. Through homework assignments and open discussion within sessions the couple will create new ways to handle old challenges.

Psychological and Educational Testing for Children, Adolescents, and Adults
Through the use of cognitive, educational and psychological assessment tools I provide a full battery of psychological tests to aid in the assessment of factors impacting an individual’s cognitive and emotional functioning. I provide assessments of children, adolescents, and both younger and older adults. The results of these assessments are used to develop treatment plans focused on the complex factors that may be interfering in an individual’s success in their lives in the cognitive, social, and emotional realms.
