This review is in memory of our 16.5 year old dog, Sox. We have been going to Shively Animal Clinic for well over 20 years. We had 4 dogs and 1 cat, so lots of visits, although sometimes I would go to another vet just because I could make an appointment and not spend all day waiting to see a vet. That being said, the treatment and vets at Shively, once seen, were good. Sox has been to this Clinic since he was a 6 week year old puppy. We called Shively about 9:30 AM on Sunday May 2nd 2021, because Sox had collapsed and could not stand up, also was crying out in pain or fear, not sure. But acting and moving strangely, in addition to not being able to stand. So I called Shively and explained the emergency situation and Sox's condition. The person I talked to told me to come right in, and they would immediately tend to Sox. Also we would not have to wait in line because of his condition. We jumped in the car immediately. The way Sox was acting, and crying out, I was not sure if we would make it there with him still alive. When we got there, the receptionist found Sox's chart and insisted on updating it because we recently moved and had a new address , phone # etc. During this time, my husband is holding Sox while his tongue is hanging out, drooling, head slumped over, and he is loudly crying out intermittently. The people waiting in line were aghast and very concerned about Sox, as was I. I could not understand WHY the address update could not of been done after Sox was seen. I was very scared for Sox and upset.... crying, unable to answer her questions, so my husband answered for me. After all that, which seemed like an eternity, the receptionist tells us that they are too busy to see Sox. I tell her, but..... I called earlier, and was told to come in!!!! She says there is no record of the call, like I was lying. She said I should of called our new vet (who was not open on Sunday) and Sox just saw 3 weeks before for the very 1st time . Then, she said something like, there is a protocol to follow in emergency situations, and we did not follow it. No immediate treatment for Sox. We can wait in the car, if we want, but, it could be an hour or more before he would be seen. She had no idea how long. She told us it would be best to go to Jefferson Emergency Hospital where we have never been and 20 minutes away. On our way out the door, one of the other customers was crying and told us she would pray for Sox. Given no choice, we went to Jefferson where it was decided that it would be best for Sox to be humanely euthanized. I still can not believe the way Sox was treated at Shively.

I have been going there since it was a small house the elder Dr. Fuch ran by himself. Now there are many vets including his children. The problem is the walk back process they have since Dr Fuch retired. And the wait. If you get there when the office opens you have as much as 4-5 hour wait sometimes. With as many vets as they have it should not be that long of a wait. And the rates have sky rocketed in the past 3-4 years. A stay in the hospital several years ago with an IV was about $25 a day, now its $125 per day. I think if you are going to pay to see a vet, you should be able to see a vet every time.
