What type of nutritional plan do you use?
We use a specially-designed, low calorie diet that consists of lean proteins, healthy carbohydrates and good fats. Our diet is based on real food that you buy from the corner grocery store. We do not use meal replacement shakes or pre-packaged meals. Our goal is to teach our patient’s how to eat real food in a way that satisfies their appetite and results in permanent weight loss.
What type of appetite suppressants do you use?
We use several different appetite suppressant medications to control hunger. Both prescription & non-prescription medications are used depending on the patient’s needs. The prescription medications are all FDA approved and are recommended by the National Institute of Health for the treatment of weight loss. They have been in use for decades and have a long history of safety and efficacy.
What is the average weight loss of a typical patient?
The typical patient that follows the program loses 5 to 10 pounds their first week and 15 to 20 pounds their first month.
Why do you see your patients on a weekly basis?
Weekly visits are essential to our patient’s success as this gives us an opportunity to assess their progress and to sit one-on-one with them to discuss problems, questions or any concerns. It is this personal interaction that creates a support system that is critical for successful weight loss. We are there for our patient’s every week to take pride in their successes and to help them through any difficulties.
What is “Zone Wellness”?
Medi-Zone is the sole provider of Dr. Barry Sears’ Zone Wellness System and has the exclusive rights to teach the Zone Diet and to carry the Zone line of supplements. After our patients achieve their weight loss goal, they are started on the Zone Wellness portion of the program. During this part we teach them the Zone diet and provide them with the knowledge, tools, tips and training they will need, not only to keep them from gaining their weight back but to live a long and healthy life.
Why did you leave your medical practice to open Medi-Zone?
After practicing clinical medicine for ten years, I became increasingly frustrated with my inability to help people lose weight given the limits of the current medical system, despite the obvious connection between people’s weight and their health. I ultimately felt that I could have a bigger impact on people’s health by focusing full time on weight loss, rather than continuing to treat their weight-related illnesses with medications. I made the decision to leave primary care, and in 2008 I helped open Medi-Zone Weight Loss and Wellness Center in Encinitas, California. Since opening Medi-Zone we have helped hundreds of people in achieving their weight loss goals and have helped to improve not only their health but also their quality of life.
