My Mom had end stage dementia. The Doctor from the assisted living center where she lived suggested we put her on hospice. She no longer recognized us, but she was still fully functional, eating, dancing to Frank Sinatra and not in any pain. However after a family meeting where we discussed how sad it was that she no longer recognized us, the hospice nurse somehow felt we wanted to hasten things along and recommended a morphine pump. I got a phone call after they hooked her onto the pump and before I could even ask the question why, she had passed. When I filed a complaint with the attorney general's office, I was actually told"she was on hospice and "she was going to die anyway" In researching for other complaints I contacted the Hospice Patience Alliance and was shocked to learn how many dozens of other people they have done this to as well and nobody speaks up because everyone thinks hospice is so wonderful & caring.....

My mother was diagnosed with lung cancer in April. Hospitalized in August with congestive heart failure, invited to join hospice and went home. They prescribed so many narcotics it was pitiful and she was not even at that stage yet. I took control of all the medications and ended up cutting some in half because the dose would make her totally incoherent. The weekly visits were great and the nurses that came out were really helpful and friendly and supportive. But when I needed someone to come out on an extra visit, like if my mom fell or was just not feeling good it took them at least 2 hours to send a nurse out. Way too long. My mom had a stroke in October and I called the Hospice to have someone come out.....two hours later- no one showed or called. I called them and finally a nurse called to ask if I still wanted someone to come out. I asked what they would do in this situation and they were just going to put on a morphine patch. If only I had known that before!! I called 911- they came and my mom died in the ambulance outside the house 15 minutes after they got there. I called Hospice to notify them of her passing. Within 10 minutes- someone was there to collect the medicine. Takes them 10 minutes to come when someone dies, but HOURS in your real time of need. I think I would have done things differently if I had a choice. Hospice "sounds" like a great idea- but it is very very tough.
