All should be cautioned, before committing themselves or loved ones to St. Francis Hospice, that the medical staff here supports the use of the controversial drug Haldol (Haloperidol) for anxiety or a condition they call "terminal restlessness." Haldol is reported to have adverse physical and neurological side effects which affect a large percentage of people who take it, even in therapeutic doses.

Typical among reports of a bad experience from Haldol is reported by one patient:
"involuntary mouth movements, tongue curling, teeth chewing and cracking, headaches, jaws closing tight as lock jaw and could not open mouth, throat closing up and could not swallow. drooling, voice sound muffled and could not speak clearly." This description of symptoms can be found in the third link below.

From another website, the following side effects are mentioned:
"Extrapyramidal side effects: The risk of permanent facial disfiguring tardive dyskinesia is around 4% per year in younger patients, higher than with most other antipsychotic drugs. In patients over the age of 45, the percentage of those afflicted can be even higher."

Akathisia: Manifests itself with anxiety, dysphoria, and an inability to remain motionless. High functioning patients have described the feeling as a sense of inner tension and torment or chemical torture.
