About Kathy Shamoun

Welcome to openspace. Kathy Shamoun is a licensed acupuncturist and a Chinese herbalist who studied Classical Chinese Medicine at the Swedish Institute of Health Sciences under 88th generation Taoist Priest and healer, Jeffrey Yuen. In addition to her years of intense training, she brings sensitivity, skill, and insight to her practice. She is deeply committed to assisting each person to live in their full potential of health, vitality and clarity.

Kathy's Philosophy:

Everything changes. As summer does not fear its end, or its transformation into fall, so we too must let go. It is when we can allow new ways of experiencing life that healing naturally follows.

"My treatments are an invitation to change and for healing to happen. It is a partnership and process on which we embark together. To that end, I relate to my patients with an open heart, an open mind, and respect... I provide a supportive, compassionate, open space where anything is possible. Because I see only one person at a time, I am keenly attuned to the needs of each patient, custom tailoring comprehensive treatments that create profound lasting change."

Treating People, Not Symptoms:

What does that mean exactly? It means that diagnosis, and hence treatment, is based on the individual's specific ways of being out of balance. The person is treated, not the condition. So, three different patients, let's say each with insomnia, will be treated in three unique ways. In this way, Classical Chinese Medicine treats the root of the issue (the process that led to imbalance) while simultaneously addressing the symptoms that result in discomfort.

How does Classical Chinese Medicine differ from ordinary acupuncture, or TCM?

The majority of acupuncturists today in the U.S. and in China practice a modernized and vastly simplified version of acupuncture which is distinct from the medical practices that existed in China prior to Communism. This simplified, modernized practice is known as "Traditional Chinese Medicine" (TCM), and was developed during the enormous cultural change in China in the 20th century.

Classical Chinese Medicine, on the other hand, integrates 74 meridians (energy pathways) while TCM uses 12 meridians and extends a gesture toward 8 others. Very important meridians, crucial to the treatment of deep-seated conditions such as cancers, auto-immune disorders, psychological disorders and inherited diseases, are omitted from TCM practice entirely.

Lectures:

Kathy has been an invited speaker, holding lectures on topics such as oncology support, infertility, sexual dysfunction, menopause, facial rejuvenation, depression and anxiety, and natural birthing with the assistance of acupuncture. Kathy is always happy to share her experience, knowledge and passion with a curious audience and is available to give talks on a number of subjects.
