I gave Dr. Bettina Herbert a tall order: I wanted the body pain, lupus pain and migraine pain under control. So far, she ha€™s delivered.

She has helped me with everything from muscular-skeletal issues to restoring my GI health. It turns out that GI health is critical to meeting my goals. Dr. Herbert tested for, and then treated, Stenotrophomonas maltophilia, which is a hospital-born bacterium that caused great GI distress for me.

After treating that problem, she moved on to prescribing probiotics that reduced my IBS symptoms and also allowed me to absorb my nutrition better. In fact, after years of having osteoporosis and osteopenia from corticosteroid use for the lupus, my last dexa scan showed that my bone density was finally in normal range.

Dr. Herbert recommended that I change my diet to reduce the level of inflammation in my body. She put me on a gluten-free, dairy-free, soy-free diet with an emphasis on choosing alkaline foods. After having a high positive ANA test since '98, I finally tested ANA negative in 2012 after religiously following the diet for almost a year. My body was healing itself once it was receiving the nutrition and care it needed. I think it's because Bettina got my gut and my body into a place where nutrition could be properly accepted and distributed.

I also have scar tissue from two lower abdominal surgeries that altered the mechanics of my hips and sacrum. The result was nagging pain in different locations. Another consequence was pain and swelling in my right knee, which had already been injured. The altered functioning of my lower abdominal and pelvic regions forced the knee into movements that strained it.

Dr. Herbert's gentle adjustments gave me the pain relief I needed, and she introduced me to frequency specific microcurrent. I found it effective enough to purchase a unit from her for my own use; it's certain better than pill-popping. She customized some home exercises for me as well.

She noted that a major contributor to my terrible migraines was my posture. Between changing that and adding some magnesium, my migraines have decreased.

The last thing left to do is taper my prednisone. We are just starting that. But everything else has been so successful that, after a year of normal blood work and no more need for injected methotrexate, my rheumatologist asked what Dr. Herbert does. I told him she's an MD who also has the adjustment training of a DO but the knowledge of an herbalist. Then he said, "Can I have some of her cards? I want to send patients to her."

Once Dr. Herbert treated body/injury pain, lupus, migraine pain, dietary needs and GI conditions, my complexion changed. Systemic lupus and my cocktail of medications took a toll on my coloring. Illness literally showed through my face.

After I felt better (and had the blood work to prove it), I needed to chuck my old makeup and to buy a warm-toned palette. Warm, vibrant tones no longer looked strange against my coloring. Previously, I was confined to cool tones without much life to them because they matched my coloring.

I was able to relax during my appointment here. Everyone makes sure you are comfortable and at ease. They paid close attention to me and all of my questions were answered. I felt a little pressured to buy products, but it wasn't overbearing. I don't know of anywhere else that would've taken better care of me. I had a great experience. The chairs in their waiting room were definitely above average. I was comfortable.
