This is a psychiatrist who has a great belief in the courage of the human heart to heal itself and in empowering the patient by seeing each individual as having a particular set of solutions to coping with real-life problems and issues - essentially the pain of living, loss, and dying that we all face. His interest is in fostering a courageous approach to reality rather than in viewing people as having an incurable disease they cannot do anything about (except take drugs, which while they can sometimes help, have little scientific basis and can also be harmful). I greatly appreciate his approach and, while not everyone can handle the truth, even when it is delivered kindly, in small doses, I think it's incredibly important to learn to take responsibility for your own happiness. In response to a prior review, I can imagine this doctor saying that he does not believe that depression is a clinical disease, but I cannot imagine him implying that someone does not feel depressed. He has been an advocate for patient empowerment throughout his career. Perhaps there is a misunderstanding here, because while most psychiatrists believe that patients are helpless victims, this one feels that they can be empowered to find new ways to deal with what are legitimate and normal aversions to life's stresses. As one who would likely have been drugged for depression without his help, I believe this approach to be highly successful - at least it was for me.

In the course of a first 10 minute visit, Dr. Leifer mocked our hometown as an armpit and told my wife she was faking her symptoms. She has suffered for months, lost weight, had become debilitated at times and had a professional psychiatrist but they were both getting frustrated with lack of progress. She visited Dr. Leifer, because he was the only other provider on our plan, with the hope that only desperate people know-- he was completely irresponsible and abusive to someone reaching out for help. It is a challenge for people suffering from deep depression to actively arrange and attend appointments to help get the treatment they need. 10 minutes with Dr. Leifer set us back months. I don't know if he had a bad day or what, but it is never acceptable for any public professional to be abusive.
