Dr. Katz graduated from City College with a B.S. degree Phi Beta Kappa. A recipient of the Jonas Salk Medical Scholarship, he attended NYU School of Medicine where he graduated Alpha Omega-Alpha. He completed his internship and first year of residency at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine-Jacobi Hospital Center before he was drafted into the U.S. Air Force at the beginning of the Vietnam War. He received the USAF Commendation Medal for his service.
Dr. Katz returned to Einstein where he served as Chief Resident in Medicine and then completed his fellowship in gastroenterology at the Cornell NY Hospital-Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. He has published over 100 peer reviewed articles, 105 abstracts and five book chapters most frequently in the area of inflammatory bowel disease. Dr. Katz is a past president of the American College of Gastroenterology, an organization of over 11,000 gastroenterologists which awarded him its three highest honors.
In 2008, he received the Townsend Harris medal from the City College of New York for his professional achievements and his work as chair of the scholarship committee for Bronx High School of Science students who were unable to afford CCNY tuition.
