Dr. Perry and his staff are nice people, but Dr. Perry simply does not possess the knowledge and skill needed to be competent in making implant dentures. The number of dental practices in Raleigh has increased significantly over the last several years. I suspect it has become difficult for a dentist to operate a successful practice when relying on traditional dental care. The fees that are charged for implants and dentures are quite high. I suspect that Dr. Perry decided to branch out into this lucrative field of dentistry without acquiring the necessary training.
The attached photo shows the dentures Dr. Perry had made for me, as they appeared initially. The alignment between the upper and lower dentures was atrocious. Dr. Perry did not agree. I was surprised that he did not immediately require the dental lab to remake the dentures. Instead, he tried to convince me that the problems were not all that severe and could be fixed. I suspect that Dr. Perry was reluctant to take issue with the dental lab because the lab had manufactured the dentures in accordance with the information provided to them by Dr. Perry. In other words, that Dr. Perry was responsible for the error, not the dental lab.
Dr. Perry did send the dentures back to the lab for some adjustment, but he insisted that most of my complaints about the dentures simply could not be resolved by the available dental technology. Specifically, the front teeth were so blunt that I could not bite through the bacon in a BLT sandwich, or bite through the bread sticks at the Olive Garden. Dr. Perry insisted that the acrylic teeth in my removable dentures could not be made as sharp as natural teeth, and that if I wanted sharp teeth, I would have to start over with teeth made of zirconia, which could be mounted only in a permanent denture. Wrong. The upper denture in particular takes up too much space in my mouth, primarily because of a metal reinforcing band that is placed too far behind the front teeth. Dr. Perry insisted that this band could not be placed closer to the teeth to reduce the intrusion of this denture into my mouth. Wrong. I was unable to chew tougher foods (like steak), I thought because the artificial molars were much smaller than my natural molars had been. Dr. Perry insisted that larger molars could not be mounted in a removable denture. Wrong. Instead, he insisted that the problem was the occlusion between the upper and lower dentures. Actually, he was right about that, but he was unable to correct the problem over the course of many follow-up visits.
I finally gave up on Dr. Perry, and made an appointment with a prosthodontist in another city. He fixed the occlusion problem in a single two hour visit. He also sharpened the acrylic teeth in my dentures, and now I can bite through foods normally. He has stated that he can have removable dentures made that will resolve my other problems, but of course at a cost of additional thousands of dollars. I have not yet made that leap of faith.
Bottom line, if you are thinking about getting implant dentures, don't put your mouth in the hands of Dr. Andrew Perry. I doubt very seriously that you will be happy with the result. Oh, and by the way, don't go to Clear Choice either. They are franchised rip-off artists. You will be paying for the thousands of misleading ads they run on TV.
