If your choice has been Bay Clinic, Kauka Urgent Care is welcome relief in that you won't wait very long to be seen. Beyond that, however, this clinic was a waste of time and money.

You begin by agreeing to pay $125 out of pocket and then describe your problem to the receptionist in full earshot of other patients. The doctor will determine whether or not he can treat you before taking your money. In my case (staph infection), he must have decided it was something he could handle.

Dr. Aberin is a friendly enough guy; good bedside manner, as they say. He met with me for about 10 minutes and prescribed two antibiotics. He suggested they might not be strong enough but he wanted to start there. If, after running the course, my symptoms hadn't disappeared, I was to call and leave word so that he could prescribe something stronger.

Everything seemed to go smoothly until I tried leaving a message for him that the medication had not worked. There was no way to leave a message nor did staff pick up the phone during business hours. When I had time to spare, I made the 20 mile trip to the clinic. I was told the doctor was on vacation and because his replacement was unfamiliar with my situation, it would be best if I waited until Dr. Aberin returned. Asked why I couldn't leave a message on the phone, the receptionist replied that they don't accept messages - that I should call during business hours. Explaining that I did call during business hours, she asked which date and I told her. She said they were closed that day. I told her I tried again a couple days later, and she said they were closed that day, too. Note that this clinic is supposed to be open 7 days a week.

Anyway, today I was finally able to make the 20 mile trip again. After indicating to his receptionist that he would be unwilling to see me again and referring me to a GP he knows I would have no hope of getting into see (if you don't have a family physician in Hilo, you're stuck with Bay Clinic or one of these urgent care places because local MD's aren't taking new patients), he called in a second dose of the same medications that failed to work the first time.

I went to Target to pick up the prescriptions only to learn that they only had authorization to fill one of the prescriptions.

A totally frustrating experience. I felt like a chump.
