What You Need to Know about the Gummy Bear Implant

by beverlyhills

Cohesive gel implants are silicone implants that are filled with a thicker silicone gel that holds its shape and form like a "gummy bear." If you cut into a standard gel implant, the liquid silicone gel escapes from the implant shell. In contrast, when you cut into a cohesive gel implant, the implant itself maintains its shape and integrity. These shaped implants are designed with a focus upon a natural look, rather than for enlargement. Furthermore, gummy bear implants maintain their shape in an upright position that decreases the incidence of folding of the implant shell or rippling. If a cohesive gel implant ruptures, it maintains both its shape and integrity.

One disadvantage of cohesive gel implants is that they require a slightly larger incision for insertion. Because of this, insertion is usually performed through an incision in the fold under the breast, or occasionally through an incision around the areola. Cohesive gel implants are very difficult to insert through an incision in the armpit. Finally, gummy bear implants were approved in late 2006 by the FDA for use in the United States, but their use is limited to certain age, and patient require strict follow-up with MRI to look for silent rupture. These types of breast implants have become a popular choice for women considering breast augmentation.

Here are some important things to consider concerning gummy bear implants:

Appearance: One of the main advantages to these types of breast implants is a more natural look. The consistency of the gel is more of a balance between solid and liquid, so they hold their shape in ways that saline cannot. They also are better apt to stay in position and less likely to wrinkle, fold over, ripple, or sag in time.

Touch: Many women report that the cohesive silicone gel feels more natural to the touch than a saline implant. This is one of the most reported advantages.

Composition: Gummy Bear implants are made of a solidified silicone gel. Silicone implants were approved by the FDA in November 2006 after years of study and trials.

Rupture: If this type of implant ruptures it will actually hold itself together, retaining its shape. These implants have a thick outer shell and are less likely to leak.

Incision Methods: One of the reported disadvantages of this type of implant, because of its size and consistency, the choice of incision methods is limited. Your scars will be a bit larger so that your plastic surgeon will have room to place the implant. Importantly, the popular belly button incision method (transumbilical) is not a possibility with gummy bears.

Durability. Only time will tell since this type of implant is relatively new to the market but the results so far are very promising.

Cost: The cost today is approximately one-thousand dollars more than a saline implant.

Size: Gummy bear implants are available in a wide variety of implant sizes. Depending upon what your goal in breast size is you may choose from sizes as small as 100cc all the way up to 1000cc.

The most important thing to do is to talk to your doctor if these implants are right for you. As with all cosmetic surgery procedures, there are certain risks involved. Depending on the size of implant, your preferences for look and feel, and other factors such as height, age, weight, medical history, etc. your doctor may have any number of suggestions for which type of implant is best for your individual case. Many women undergo several breast augmentation procedures, because they are unhappy with the size or feel of their implants. This surgery is an investment, so it is important to really get an idea of the outcome of the surgery, before you make any final decisions.
