Why I chose to pursue a career in healthcare: I have always been fascinated by science. My favorite toy used to be a microscope. I grew up in the former Soviet Union where more women chose to pursue a career in medicine. My grandmother was a pediatric ophthalmologist and as a little girl I loved to visit her in the eye clinic. I learned very quickly that I wanted to be like my grandmother. She had a passion for knowledge and she loved to take care of people. I decided to become a physician when I was very young. I absolutely loved being a student throughout all the years of college and medical school. I learned that I love surgery the first time I was exposed to the operating room as a second year medical student.
